Julien Monnerie comes to Jones, the restaurant formerly known as Bones: “Bones becomes Jones, a single letter change hiding other changes.” The letter J, sourced from a cufflink bearing the artist’s initials (JM) previously referenced in wall works, appears on custom-made tablecloths, to be used by diners during Avant-Première and the week of FIAC, until they run out. A wall work featuring ancient and new keys invite to the upstairs room, where sculptures recalling cake molds or perhaps extraterrestrial architecture, and two silkscreen works based on a cufflink design are displayed. Referencing various traditional forms of craftsmanship, the enigmatic works turn the restaurant into a place not only of fine eating, but fine living.
Julien Monnerie (b. 1987) lives and works in Paris. He often works in close collaboration with craftspeople, including hat makers, leather workers, blacksmiths and others, remembering utilitarian practice in his treasurable visual world. Working primarily in sculpture and printmaking, Monnerie shows us a peculiar meeting of the traditional with the personal.
Exhibitions include Le Plateau (FRAC), Paris; Shanaynay, Paris; Palette Terre, Paris; Room East, New York; Van Gelder, Amsterdam; Apes and Castles, Brussels. Bel Ami will mount a solo presentation of Monnerie’s work in 2019.
